So I was reading this blog post recently about the number of Punjabis in Canada. It was a pretty funny post and kinda got me thinking how Punjabi people usually have this fun quotient attached with them. You hear some one is a Punjabi and you immediately get this funny picture in your mind. You know that that person is gonna be fun to hang around with.
I happen to have a few Punjabi friends (fortunately or unfortunately). And one thing that usually comes up in our conversations is the funny accent with which Punjabi people speak Hindi at times. I mean, you have seen Hindi movies right. From DDLJ to Love Story 2050. They all have funny Punjabi characters speaking in hilarious Punjabi accents. So I decided to make a small list of some words which you may hear Punjabi people use, but you may interpret them wrongly. First comes the word in English (as used by every one else), and then comes the interpretation if you hear it from a Punjabi person. The key is to take the short sounding vowel-less word, and expand it by trying some combinations of different vowels.
1) sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, etc.
If a Punjabi says sport, what he means is "support" : to bear or hold up, to sustain or withstand
2) pronto: promptly; quickly
If a Punjabi says pronto, what he means is "parantha": Indian bread made from wheat flour, usually stuffed with potatoes, cheese, carrots, cauliflower or any vegetable you want. Eaten with butter, pickle, ketchup or what ever you want.
3) prada: well-known Italian fashion house with retail outlets worldwide.
If a Punjabi says prada, what he means is "pra da": belonging to or owned by (elder) brother
4) kannada: language spoken in Karnataka, India, 27th most spoken language in the world
If a Punjabi says kannada, what he means is "the country Canada": northern neighbor of US, the Punjab of North America, mostly inhabited along the border with US
5) brack: a stain, flaw or crack
If a Punjabi says brack: what he means is "Barack Obama": democratic presidential nominee 2008
6) cracked: broken or damaged
If a Punjabi says cracked: what he means is "correct": accurate, conforming to fact or truth
